DNA Group, Inc. Receives 1997 Supplier of the Year Award
From Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex

Announcement

DNA Group, Inc. was named as 1997 "Supplier of the Year" by Hamilton Beach/Proctor Silex at its annual Supplier's Appreciation Dinner in Richmond, Virginia. Eric Vaughn, DNA's President, accepted the award from Leslie Clark, Senior Vice President of Operations and Dick Zaino, Vice President of Purchasing.

Partnership Program
DNA and Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex are in the third year of a multi-year renewable agreement, which has several key elements:

Logistics:
Key Features: buffer stock with seasonal adjustments, distribution centers at strategic locations, integrated electronic on-line logistics in future.

Expansion of Product Line:
Allow Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex to consolidate supply base by developing new items with DNA.

Quality Program:
Certified status eliminates incoming inspection.

Cost Reductions:
Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex provides new sales opportunities as incentives and requires annual cost proposals in return.

The spirit of the partnership program is "Incentives". Both DNA and Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex provide and receive incentives to keep the partnership program healthy and expanding into new areas. Mr. Eric Vaughn, DNA President, explained, "Our relationship with Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex is built around 'mutual self-interest'. We try to provide each other with incentives for new opportunities which in turn make us more valuable to each other"

Responsive to the Mass Merchant

"We try to look beyond our customer to serve the needs of our customer's customer." This philosophy, according to DNA's National Sales Manager Frank Kaul, has guided the sales, engineering and logistics support programs supporting the relationship over the years. This means that DNA needs to have a product development cycle, logistics system and cost structure that provides Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex with the ability to respond quickly to a shifting schedule or new opportunity at one of their dominant customers.

According to Mr. Kaul, DNA's infrastructure is built to accommodate or anticipate the demands of the major retailers "Virtually all our customers are heavily influenced if not dependant on their relationship with one or several retailers like Kmart, Wal-Mart, Target, Lowe's, Circuit City, Home Depot, or Office Depot. So, as a component supplier to appliance OEMs, it does not matter much whether the switch is used in a blender, rechargeable drill, air cleaner, air conditioner, computer monitor or upright vacuum cleaner, we are always serving the demands of the mass retailer. Our objective is to manage or respond better than anyone else in our industry and give our customers a competitive advantage they could not get from one of our competitors."

History

The relationship between Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex, Defond, and DNA Group, Inc. dates back fifteen years. During this period Defond has supplied a wide range of products, including rocker, rotary, slide, thumb-wheel, toggle and keyboard type pushbutton switches, and value added controls. It is likely that more than 50 million switches were supplied by Defond in these years.

The structure of DNA and Defond together with their European associate, SIBER Group, is specifically organized to satisfy the global needs of a customer like Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex.

DNA will recommend the most cost effective switch or control solution for the application regardless of whether the production site is in the US or Mexico or through a sourced product supplier in Europe or Asia.

For more complex controls, the designers of DNA/Defond and Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex may collaborate directly via email, or the Internet or on-site visits on both the electronic and mechanical aspects of the new project.

This service level provides single-source focus for Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex's purchasing and engineering staff.
